Reconstructive Surgeries

Urological reconstructive surgeries are procedures performed to restore or repair the normal function and structure of the urinary tract, male reproductive organs, and pelvic floor.

Here are some common types of urological reconstructive surgeries:

Urinary Tract Reconstruction:

  • Urethroplasty: Repair of the urethra, often to correct strictures (narrowing) or other structural abnormalities.
  • Bladder Augmentation: Increasing the size of the bladder using tissue grafts or synthetic materials, often to improve bladder capacity and function in patients with neurogenic bladder or other conditions.
  • Urinary Diversion: Surgical creation of a new way for urine to exit the body, typically after removal of the bladder (cystectomy) due to cancer or other diseases. Types of urinary diversion include ileal conduit, continent urinary reservoir (such as the Indiana pouch), and neobladder reconstruction.

Pelvic Floor Reconstruction:

  • Pelvic Floor Repair: Correction of pelvic organ prolapse, which involves restoring the normal position and support of pelvic organs (such as the bladder, uterus, or rectum) that have descended into the vaginal canal or through the pelvic floor.
  • Sling Procedures: Placement of supportive slings or meshes to treat stress urinary incontinence (leakage of urine with activities such as coughing, sneezing, or lifting).

Male Genital Reconstruction:

  • Hypospadias Repair: Correction of a congenital condition where the urethral opening is located on the underside of the penis instead of at the tip.
  • Penile Reconstruction: Surgery to reconstruct or repair the penis following trauma, cancer treatment, or congenital anomalies.
  • Testicular Implantation: Placement of prosthetic testicles (testicular implants) for cosmetic or psychological reasons after removal of one or both testicles (orchiectomy).

Reconstructive Surgery for Erectile Dysfunction:

  • Penile Prosthesis Implantation: Surgical placement of inflatable or malleable penile prostheses to restore erectile function in men with severe erectile dysfunction that does not respond to other treatments.
  • Penile Revascularization: Microsurgical techniques to restore blood flow to the penis in men with arterial insufficiency causing erectile dysfunction.

Reconstructive Surgery for Incontinence:

  • Artificial Urinary Sphincter (AUS) Implantation: Surgical placement of a device that mimics the function of the urinary sphincter to treat severe urinary incontinence in men.
  • Male Sling Procedure: Placement of a supportive sling or mesh around the urethra to treat male urinary incontinence, typically following prostate surgery.
